End of the Road

Today was quite disappointing.  We set off from Bend on our way to Crater Lake. When we reached the junction that should have led us into the north side of the park the signs all said the road was closed.  So we decided to enter the south side. When we actually got into the park the ranger said that viability was "Limited" truth was it was zero. The lake was not visible from anywhere.  The rim road was closed due to 12-14 feet of snow still on the road.  We are talking June 18th here.  That picture shows Gavin playing in the back of the gift shop the sign says don't get on the roof, the wood structure at the top of the snow bank.  This is crazy  but what we have seen throughout our trip through the north.. The amount of Snow and water in rivers has been amazing. The tree lined road below is highway 97 leading to Mt. Shasta.  Shasta is covered with snow below the cloud line. We got to Redding at about 7pm and I decided that rather than push everyone home we would stop for one more hotel visit. Watched a disappointing Giants - A's game and will head home in the morning.  Looking forward to seeing everyone tomorrow and sharing this really amazing journey.

Craters of the Moon, Idaho

We got to Craters of the Moon today.  Not at all what I expected.  Lots and lots of lava flows and lava rock.  We stopped in at the visitors center to buy the obligatory key chain and I asked the ranger where is the best place to take a 4 year old.  She directed use to Indian Cave.  It could not have been a better suggestion.  Gavin had such a good time he found some snow and enjoyed climbing over the rocks with the grace of a mountain goat. No bumps no scrapes (well maybe a few) but not tears.   The walk was about 2 miles and the wind was fast and furious.  It got cold by the time we got back to the car.  Before we could get out of the park about a 15 minutes drive he was out cold.

Yellowstone

We had an amazing day in Yellowstone.  I have wanted to bring Teddy here since he was born. Gavin enjoyed the trip and was really interested in the Painted Pots of boiling mud.  We stopped at Lake Yellowstone on a sand bar to give him time to relax out of the car and he had a great time throwing rocks and playing despite the cold temps and as you can see howling wind.

We saw elk and buffalo, lots of birds and squirrels.  Stayed at a place called Jackson Lake Lodge which was very nice and very near the great view of the Tetons.

After leaving the park we went to Jackson Hole to stretch our legs once more and have Pizza at "Betty Rocks" which was really nice.

Tomorrow we are off to the Craters of the Moon national park.

Great day in Yellowstone

Spent whole day in Yellowstone just passed the Tetons heading for dinner in Jackson Hole.

Crazy Horse Monument

Stopped in at Crazy Horse monument it is really a work in progress the head and part of the hand are done.  Will have to stop back in about 25 years and see if it looks anything like the statue.  Not sure how I feel about this carving up of the hillside.  But as long as it doesn't catch on everywhere I guess its ok.

Trip to South Dakota

We stopped in Cheyenne, WY for lunch yesterday picked up some lunch at Burger Inn and walked G-man over the the park two blocks away.  We played in the playground and eat burgers.  Great stretch of the legs,  Temps were mid 70's.  The drive from Cheyenne to Mt. Rushmore was really beautiful in and out of thunderstorms, and green rolling hills.

Mt. Rushmore

We made Mt. Rushmore about 7:30. Had a look at monument in the rain then in for dinner. Then we watched lighting ceremony, which bored the hello out of Gavin.

Gavin did two trips on the river.

We did two days on the river with Gavin doing family floats.  Nothing two exciting but we had a very good time.  Be sure to see the whole list of the photos on the right side of the site.

Rockies Lose

Teddy and I watch the Rockies make yet another mistake in the field.  They lost 11-7. The non baseball fans enjoyed the game due to the high number of runs and lost of action.

Zion National Park

Spent today in Zion National Park.  We did the Emerald Pools trail about 3.5 miles.  Gavin did the hike like a trouper.  You may notice that Gavin is walking in all the pictures.  We forgot the backpack so he is on his own to do the hiking.  He has been great, a few minor annoying things but hay for a four year old he is great.  We have driven about 15 hours in the past two days and done many things already those are very full days for me and he is doing it right along with us.

Gavin at Zion

I think maybe Gavin enjoyed the shuttle bus at Zion most of all.
